Contre-Monument
This corpus, presented at the Gabrovo Biennial of Humor (Bulgaria), consists of two drawings and a sculpture functioning as counter-monuments that challenge the patriarchal values upheld by commemorative statues. My practice parallels the decolonial movement advocating for the removal of monuments dedicated to racist and violent historical figures. However, many of these statues remain in public view, protected by official institutions, city public art programs, or heritage policies that deem them historically and artistically significant.
Tinged with humor and cynicism, my drawings and sculptures reveal the patriarchal and colonial values embedded in commemorative practices and propose alternative solutions in anticipation of their eventual removal.
